The Research Directorate is delighted to be associated with a number of honorary research and research fellows. The title is awarded to those who are research active and have demonstrated a commitment to research in their own area. It is possible to apply for honorary research fellow status here.

Dr Azrin Muslim

Dr Azrin Muslim is substantive Research Fellow with the Midwest Research Directorate and Medical Registrar, interests focused on converging technologies—artificial intelligence, blockchain, genomics, robotics, and digital health/IoT—to drive healthcare innovation. His work aims to bridge clinical practice with transformative digital solutions for future-ready research

Dr Ciara Luke

‘Dr Ciara Luke is a specialist anaesthesiology trainee. Her research interests involve the intersection between critical care and obstetric anaesthesia. She is currently undertaking an analysis of maternal admissions to the critical care unit. She has previously published manuscripts on the environmental impact of neuraxial anaesthesia and pain during caesarean section.’

Dr Carolyn Cullinane

Carolyn Cullinane is a final year general and colorectal SpR in UHL. Having completed her medical degree and foundation year training in the NHS, she returned to her native Limerick to commence surgical training. During her surgical training she completed a masters in surgical science and master’s in healthcare leadership from UCC and a MD in circulating tumour DNA from UCC. During her final year in training she served as lead peri-operative NCHD for the UL hospital group. Her research interests include social determinants of health, survivorship and quality improvement. Carolyn is currently researching the effects of social deprivation on colorectal cancer outcomes. 

Dr Marwa Mustafa

Dr Marwa Mustafa is a Specialist Registrar in Geriatric Medicine and General Internal Medicine at University Hospital Limerick and a Master’s by Research student at the University of Limerick. She earned her MBBS in Malaysia and has clinical experience in Geriatric Medicine, General Internal Medicine, and Emergency Medicine. Her work in Emergency Medicine, combined with a background in general and geriatric care, sparked a focused interest in the challenges faced by older adults in the Emergency Department. Her current research explores the role of Comprehensive Geriatric Assessment in the ED and strategies to improve outcomes for this vulnerable population.

Dr Sahl Musa

Dr. Sahl Musa is currently enrolled in a general practice training program with the Irish College of General Practitioners (ICGP) in the Midwest. He received his Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery from the University of Khartoum. Dr. Musa’s experience includes co-founding Abha General Hospital. He also served as Assistant to the Chief of the COVID-19 Response Task Force in the Aseer Region, where he contributed to data analysis and strategic planning to address the pandemic. Additionally, he held the position of Technical Supervisor for Maternity hospitals within the Aseer region. Dr. Musa also developed and implemented the health system transformation strategic plan for the Aseer region, transitioning it from a public to a hybrid model.

Dr Liam Kelly

Dr Liam Kelly is a specialist respiratory trainee from Galway. His interests include quality improvement where he has previously established a hospital wide system for antibiotic allergy de-labelling and introduced a formalised hand-over system for NCHDs. He is currently working with HSELand to develop a tool to educate NCHDs on VTE prophylaxis prescribing nation-wide.

Dr Orla Holmes

Dr Orla Holmes, is in her first year of specialty training in Geriatric and General Internal Medicine. Hery current areas of research interest include frailty and rehabilitation. She is currently completing a research masters with the University of Limerick. As part of this Masters programme she is conducting a prospective cohort study focusing on the clinical characteristics and process outcomes of adults attending rehabilitation Hospitals in the Mid – West of Ireland.
